Alexandria, Va., (February 7, 2017) - As the leading advocate for public education, the National School Boards Association (NSBA) issued the following statement after the U.S Senate confirmed Betsy DeVos to serve as U.S. Secretary of Education:

“NSBA congratulates Betsy DeVos on her confirmation as the 11th United States Secretary of Education. We look forward to working with Secretary DeVos to enhance public education and ensure that every child has an opportunity to a high quality education.

“Public education has been a fundamental part of America, preparing students for life and contributing to the nation’s prosperity. This is a pivotal time in public education and our nation’s school children deserve the best education possible. We must and we can enhance public education by working together to find and implement the best ideas to accomplish this.

“We must never forget how important public education is and the impact it has. Public education has a role in providing solutions to every important issue facing America and it is the path to capitalize on the opportunities before us. Public schools have lifted generations of people from lower to middle income, and from middle to higher income. It will continue to do so.

“The passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act was a much needed step to create a better future for students, and NSBA and school board members are committed to being a constructive leader in delivering on its promise. We also are eager to address key issues including child nutrition reauthorization, career and technical education, and federal education investments.

“The start of the Trump administration creates an opportunity to ensure state and local governance of education, which is essential to enhance public education. School boards are best able to develop innovative solutions and make informed decisions to meet student learning objectives because of their knowledge of their schools and resources in their community.”

The National School Boards Association (NSBA) is the leading advocate for public education and supports equity and excellence in public education through school board leadership. NSBA believes education is a civil right necessary to the dignity and freedom of the American people, and all children should have equal access to an education that maximizes his or her individual potential. The association represents state school boards associations and their more than 90,000 local school board members throughout the U.S.
