President Obama signs the Every Student Succeeds Act

In an historic milestone for local governance and our country’s 90,000 local school board members, President Barack Obama today signed into law, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the bipartisan reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.

"NSBA applauds lawmakers for restoring local governance and working with our public education stakeholders to end the prescriptive requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act – strengthening the ability of states and local school board members to act in the best interests of students, parents, and local communities,” said Thomas J. Gentzel, Executive Director, National School Boards Association.

Today’s signing represents a significant move forward for local governance and NSBA stands committed to working with and through our state associations for ESSA’s implementation in support of equity and excellence in public education.
