A view of Washington, D.C. from the Potomac River

In the legislative, legal and public arenas, NSBA shapes federal education policy, raises public awareness of critical issues such as school safety and champions the mission of public education to prepare our nation's youth for the future. We draw national attention to important issues by advocating on Capitol Hill, in state and federal courts and in the media for the urgent need of our students and their public schools.

Our advocacy efforts helped produce significant achievements including restored funding for school safety, increased investments in Title I and passage of the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act. We have weighed in on key legal cases and conveyed a key point of view in cases such as South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. which creates an opening for potential funding streams for public schools.

Legal Advocacy

NSBA's legal advocacy brings the local public school board perspective to a national audience as an established and credible influencer. NSBA’s unique position in the world of public education as a representative of elected officials whose sole interest is the education of our children has allowed it to articulate perspectives and offer views that influence the national discourse, impact policy, and provide weight to judicial consideration of issues that will affect public schools.
