Claudia A. Withers

Managing Director, Equity Programs

Claudia Withers is the Managing Director, Equity Programs, for the National School Boards Association (NSBA). She reports to Verjeana Jacobs, the Chief Equity and Member Services Officer for NSBA. 

 Claudia was formerly the Chief Operating Officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).   She has also served as a Deputy General Counsel in the Office of General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Education, where she managed lawyers in the Business and Administrative Law Division.

She has served as the Director of Programs for the District of Columbia Bar Foundation, Director of Public Policy for the Center for Women Policy Studies, the Executive Director of the Fair Employment Council of Greater Washington, and the Director of Employment Programs for the National Partnership on Women and Families (formerly the Women’s Legal Defense Fund).

Claudia has been a principal in her own consulting firm, Winston Withers Associates, and has served as an adjunct professor at the David A. Clarke School of Law at the University of the District of Columbia, and the Washington College of Law at American University.  She practiced law in Durham, NC, and clerked for the Honorable Richard C. Erwin for the Middle District of North Carolina.  She is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill School of Law and Duke University.
