NSBA on next steps for K-12 education hearing

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Representative John Kline (R-MN), held a hearing today titled, “Next Steps for K-12 Education: Upholding the Letter and Intent of the Every Student Succeeds Act. The hearing featuring testimony from Dr. John B. King, Jr., acting secretary of education.

In advance of the hearing, the National School Board Association (NSBA) issued a letter to the Committee on Education and the Workforce commending their efforts during the reauthorization of ESEA to support school districts and restore local governance and community ownership in public education. In the letter, NSBA also provided recommendations for the committee as they look at next steps in ESSA’s implementation and examine the federal government’s role in education.

The recommendations include providing clarification on what “meaningful consultation” with local stakeholders will look like; providing technical support for school districts; and ensuring that the local school board perspective is included in the ongoing conversations on negotiated rulemaking.
