Addressing teacher turnover in high-poverty, high-minority urban schools

Teacher turnover in high-poverty, high-minority urban schools can top 20 percent annually. Among new teachers, as many as half walk away from the profession in their first five years. This is unacceptable. Urban education cannot hope to close the achievement gap with such turnover. But there is hope: Research shows that providing the right support makes a huge difference in teacher retention.

Honoring urban school boards that are making a difference

Each year NSBA’s Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) recognizes exemplary school boards for their excellence in school board governance, ability to build civic capacity, success in closing the achievement gap and working for equity in education, and demonstrated success of academic excellence.

Thank you for attending and participating in the CUBE’s 49th Annual Conference. It was most certainly a lot of work for all of you who attended, but we also know that as you return to your districts you carry the knowledge and experiences of this time and will use that to further drive your school districts in the right direction towards Excellence, Equity, and Unity.

Judge Hatchett: Do all you can for children

It was Saturday, not Sunday, when Judge Glenda Hatchett spoke at the Council of Urban Boards of Education luncheon at NSBA’s Annual Conference in Denver. And no one said, “Amen.” But ask anybody who was there: Church was in session.

Tacoma Public Schools winner of NSBA 2016 Urban School Board Excellence Award

The Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) Award for Urban School Board Excellence was created in 2004 to recognize the leadership of urban school districts where effective school board governance has an impact on student achievement, and this year’s winner has more than demonstrated its leadership in reshaping the academic program and the success of its students.
