March 9, 2016

Alexandria, Va. (March 9, 2016) – The National School Boards Association (NSBA), the leading advocate of public schools, announced today that Rory Davenport has joined the organization to strengthen its advocacy capabilities and enhance its brand. Davenport comes with a wealth of experience developing and implementing successful public affairs campaigns on significant public policy issues as well as a track record for enhancing reputations and building strong brands. He will serve as the association’s Associate Executive Director, Public Advocacy & Communications, and join a leadership team that helped engineer the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

“Public advocacy is a vital aspect of NSBA and school boards will be even more effective advocates for public education with the addition of Rory,” Thomas J. Gentzel, NSBA Executive Director. “NSBA’s work in the legislative, legal, and public areas is helping produce sound and forward-thinking public policy that enhances the quality of education for every student and adding Rory to the team strengthens our capabilities.”

Davenport is an award-winning public affairs executive who has held executive roles at four of the most prestigious global communications agencies. He is recognized as a change agent and an expert strategist and message-crafter. He has worked on many key issues debated in Washington during the past 20 years. He was an early practitioner of campaign-style lobbying efforts as well as incorporating branding concepts in and adapting technology to the advocacy area.

“Education is the new frontier and I am honored to be on a team working to secure a brighter future for students and communities,” said Rory Davenport. “I look forward to working with a team of accomplished government relations professionals and legal experts, who have already succeeded in bringing about milestone policies and court rulings to enhance public education and are poised to make even greater contributions.”

With ESSA came the promise to reduce the federal role and restore state and local control over K-12 education.  NSBA with Davenport and the full leadership team will continue its efforts, working with the state school board associations, to ensure that ESSA is implemented as intended, in collaboration with local school boards and other key education stakeholders, and returning the decision-making authority to state and local communities in support of academic success for every public school student across the country.
