NSBA’s Council of Urban Boards of Education Announces 2016-2017 Leadership

Alexandria, Va. (April 18, 2016) - The National School Boards Association’s (NSBA) Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) elected leaders and new members to its Steering Committee during its annual business meeting at NSBA’s Annual Conference, April 9-11, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Verjeana Jacobs, Esq. of Prince George’s County Public Schools, Maryland, was elected Chair of CUBE’s Steering Committee; Bruce Alexander of Akron Public Schools, Ohio, Vice Chair; Susan Valdes of Hillsborough County School District, Florida, Secretary; and Willetta Milam of Cleveland Municipal School District, Ohio, Treasurer. Van Henri White of Rochester City School District, New York, now serves as the Committee’s Immediate Past Chair.

“I’m proud to serve as chair of the Council of Urban Boards of Education,” said Jacobs, “and I’m committed to working with the Committee in support of urban school boards efforts to close achievement and opportunity gaps so that our children and young people can flourish and have future success.”

Jacobs, CUBE’s newly elected Chair, is a steadfast advocate for public education and has served as an elected member of the Prince George’s County Board of Education since 2006. A career correctional professional, she worked at the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections from 1989 to 2012 where she retired as chief of the Office of Responsibility and Legal Affairs at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She has extensive legal and professional knowledge and expertise in areas such as organizational management, strategic planning, capacity building, and governance-board development.

School board members newly elected to serve a 3-year term on CUBE’s steering committee include:

Micah Ali of Compton Unified School District, California. Ali is the Vice-President of the Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees. He also serves as Vice President of the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association.

Rhonda Skillern-Jones of Houston Independent School District (HISD), Texas. Skillern-Jones is serving her second consecutive term on the HISD Board of Education, and represents the District on the Texas Association of School Boards’ Board of Directors.
