2014 Technology Site Visits to Showcase Digital Innovations in Public Schools in AZ, MN, CO

School Districts in Arizona, Colorado, and Minnesota are Featured for Outstanding Technology Initiatives

Alexandria, Va. (Jan. 22, 2014) — The National School Boards Association’s (NSBA) 2014 Education Technology Site Visits will give education professionals the opportunity to experience firsthand innovations in education technology and the best ways to use technology in classrooms. Registration is now open for this year’s programs, sponsored by NSBA’s Technology Leadership Network (TLN). TLN helps advance the wise use of technology in K-12 education to support learning, operations, and communications.

“NSBA’s Education Technology Site Visits represent the intersection of policy and practice by offering real-world examples of how technology is helping to transform the K-12 learning environment,” said Thomas J. Gentzel, NSBA’s Executive Director. “These highly interactive visits help decision-makers experience how today’s digital tools and resources contribute to personalized student learning.”

The school districts showcasing their innovative programs are:

  • Vail School District, Vail, Ariz., Feb. 26-28, 2014
  • Minnetonka Public Schools, Minnetonka, Minn., April 30 – May 2, 2014
  • Colorado Springs District 11, Colorado Springs, Col., May 4 – 6, 2014

The Vail visit will showcase Empire High School, opened in 2005 as the first one-to-one, textbook free school in the nation. The district will share lessons learned from best practices around bring your own device implementation, equipping buses with Wi-Fi, and its creation of Beyond Textbooks, a comprehensive program that supports curriculum, instruction, assessment, and multi-level interventions.

Since NSBA’s popular 2007 TLN site visit in Minnetonka, significant innovations have been introduced that warrant a second visit. Participants will experience firsthand how technology accelerates learning in the primary grades through language immersion, early childhood, special education, and the arts while Minnetonka’s 1:1 iPad program highlights the district’s approach to digital learning at the secondary level.

Few districts have embraced that concept of personalized learning as fully as Colorado Springs District 11. The visit will focus on the district’s commitment to Personalized Learning Plans, the staffing and professional development to support them, and how technology helps to prepare every student, every day and in every class for a world yet to be imagined.
