Penn State honors NSBA Exec. Dir. & CEO Gentzel

The Pennsylvania State University, College of Education’s Alumni Society held its award banquet Friday, October 5, recognizing alumni in six categories. NSBA Executive Director and CEO, Tom Gentzel, was honored with the Service to Penn State award which recognizes those alumni and friends who have made significant contributions of time and talent to the College and/or the University.

"Mr. Thomas J. Gentzel is a positive example of public leadership supporting and influencing education across Pennsylvania and the United States and continuously supporting education at Penn State," Lawrence J. Wess, executive director of The Pennsylvania School Study Council, said. "Mr. Gentzel is a true advocate of public education."

Prior to NSBA, Gentzel served as a county administrator and assistant executive director of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Commissioners. He joined the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) staff in 1980 as a lobbyist and was promoted to head the organization's Office of Governmental and Member Relationships, a position he held for more than 16 years. In 2001, he became the executive director of the PSBA.

Gentzel represented Pennsylvania as vice president at large for the National School Public Relations Association and as a member of the Outreach Advisory Board for Penn State. He served on the State Advisory Panel on Special Education and was appointed by Gov. Tom Ridge and reappointed twice by Gov. Edward Rendell. 

"Tom supports what works for the best interest of students from a position of statewide and now national influence," said Tracy P. Hinish, assistant executive director of the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit.

Gentzel holds both a bachelor’s degree in Community Development and Master of Public Administration from Penn State.
