Keeping public funds in public schools

Legislation was recently introduced that will allow public funds to be used to pay private school tuition. The Education Savings Accounts for Military Families Act [H.R. 5199] allows active duty military parents to set up Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), that can be used for a wide variety of education services for their children, including private school tuition.

School districts that serve the majority of students from military and tribal families rely upon funding from Impact Aid. If this proposed legislation passes, Impact Aid, and therefore public schools, stand to lose $450 million in funding.

NSBA voiced its opposition of the bill and any school voucher amendment in a formal letter to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. Learn more about this proposed legislation by reading our letter here and the text of the bill here.
