In 2006, Cullman City Schools was the first school district in Alabama to adopt a One-to-One Laptop Initiative, providing laptops and wireless Internet access to students and educators. Since launching the initiative, Cullman City Schools has enjoyed significantly improved student test scores, increased student attendance and improved discipline in the classroom. In addition, the district has been active in t he community, from conducting research to providing education technology guidance, and was recognized for its visionary leadership.

Cullman City Schools has garnered over $500 , 000 i n grants for its efforts , was selected as a 2009 TLN Salute District, and in 2010, district superintendent Dr. Jan Harris was selected as an eSchool News Tech - Savvy Superintendent. The Cullman City Schools technology team was also selected as the 2011 recipient of the Consortium of School Networking (CoSN) Team Award for its effective leadership in using technology to increase opportunities and accessibility for student learning, build community with parents, teachers and school leaders, and improve instruction, teacher training and student learning.

Through a commitment to improve student learning, the district has provided students with greater access to technological resources that mirror real-world tools and applications, provided contact with students in other countries via video conferencing, provided access to courses not available on a local level with the assistance of the Alabama Department of Education Distance Learning program (ACCESS), and leveled the playing field for students with limited access to technology. The city of Cullman is an urban location with a rural, small-town feeling. Located on just over 19 squa r e miles of land, Cullman is home to approximately 15,000 people and serves 3,000 students in its five schools (one primary, two elementary, one middle, and one high school).
