Eastern Townships School Board ◊ March 28-30, 2010
The Eastern Townships School Board (ETSB) is located approximately 70 miles east of Montreal and 50 miles north of Burlington, Vermont. Covering a territory the size of Maryland, our School Board provides educational services to over 6,500 students, covering the entire socio-economic spectrum. In 2003, the ETSB was the fi rst Canadian School Board to provide free wireless Apple laptop computers to all students in grades 3-11 (the last year of high school in Quebec). The ETSB is also among the few North American educational institutions to have initiated and maintained this transformational process within our classrooms and schools. You will get a fi rst-hand opportunity to talk directly to teachers, students, administrators, parents, and trustees on the impact that our 1:1 program, the Enhanced Learning Strategy, has had on student achievement, dropout rates, motivation, and behavior.
Our student achievement rates in literacy-numeracy have increased, our dropout rates have decreased, attitudes about learning and teaching have improved, positive economic and community indicators were generated and supportive research was produced.
The ETSB’s most unique feature is that the entire curriculum is based on a socio-constructivist approach, with emphasis on project-based learning. The shift to this approach is in the fi nal stages of implementation at the last year of high school. On this site visit you will enter a very different educational experience. Elementary schooling is divided into three two-year cycles (cycle 1-2-3) and at the high school level, two cycles (cycle 1-2). Add the presence of technology into this environment, and you will observe some of the major transformational qualities that can help your district.
Plus experience a presentation by the “Education Department” of the world famous Cirque du Soleil!
Coming to Quebec will not only be an exceptional opportunity to see how education is changing, but you will also experience the bilingual (French- English) environment of the area. As we say in Québec: “Au plaisir de vous voir!” (We hope to see you!
