Digital media is here to stay
Anyone with a teenager knows that the use of digital media is on the rise. As BoardBuzz previously mentioned, in a recent report issued by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a non-profit research organization, the average amount of time children ages 8 to 18 spend using media for non-school related activities is up to seven hours and 38 minutes per day — that’s an increase of more than an hour compared to the same study conducted in 2004.

School board members take to the hill
The Federal Relations Network (FRN) helped secure many legislative victories for school boards in 2009 and is now tasked with even more pressing advocacy efforts this year, NSBA’s leaders said at the FRN opening session.

As important news breaks, you will see online-only stories published that feature the perspective of NSBA’s leadership. School Board News Today will also feature links to NSBA’s press releases, position statements, and key issues and events.

Starting this weekend, our staff will be covering NSBA’s Leadership Conference and the Federal Relations Network meeting, posting stories and pictures throughout the day from Saturday through Tuesday. We also will do the same for NSBA’s 70th Annual Conference, which will be held April 10-12 in Chicago.

Obama administration seeks sweeping overhaul of NCLB
The Obama administration is proposing a major overhaul of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), says the New York Times. The proposal calls for broad changes in how schools are judged to be succeeding or failing, and the elimination of the law’s 2014 deadline for bringing every American child to academic proficiency.
