NSBA's Councils: Supporting the unique needs of historically disadvantaged students

NSBA has four councils that represent school board members in districts with underserved students. The councils—the National American Indian/Alaska Native Council of School Board Members (AIAN), the National Black Council of School Board Members (NBC), the Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE), and the National Hispanic Council (NHC)—have been working for years to ensure that school board members both understand and are equipped to support the unique needs of historically disadvantaged children.

During NSBA’s Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas, April 7-9, new leadership and appointments to the council boards were announced for 2018.

AIAN

Aaron Stevens, Richmond Community Schools, Indiana was appointed AIAN Director, Central Region.

CUBE

Micah Ali, Compton Unified School District, California was re-elected to serve a second 1-year term as Chair.

Rhonda Skillern-Jones, Houston Independent School District, Texas was re-elected to serve a second 1-year term as Vice-Chair.

Ruth Veales, Oklahoma City Public Schools, Oklahoma was re-elected to serve a second 1-year term as Secretary.

Dr. Steve Gallon, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Florida was elected to serve on the Steering Committee.

Steve Corona, Fort Wayne Community Schools, Indiana; Susan Vales, Hillsborough County School District, Florida; and Martha Wilson, Camden City School District, New Jersey were re-elected to second terms on the Steering Committee.

NBC

Carla Windfont with the Crosby Independent School District, Texas is the new NBC Chair.

Donald Gant, DeSoto Independent School District, Texas is Chair-Elect.

Tanya Eagleton, Crosby Independent School District, Texas will serve as Secretary.

Dr. Emma Turner of La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, California is now the Immediate Past Chair.

Other changes include the election of Michael Jaime, Sewanhaka Central High School District, New York, Northeast Region Director and Dr. Tamara Young, Country Club Hills School District, Illinois, Central Region Director.

NHC

Joel Rodriguez, East Chicago, Illinois was re-elected to serve another 2-year term as Director, Central Region. Learn more about the NHC and its board here.
