NSBA appoints Lucy Gettman, Chief Advocacy Officer & Ronald Skinner, Chief Member Services Officer

NSBA is pleased to announce that Lucy Gettman has been appointed Chief Advocacy Officer and Ronald Skinner has been has appointed Chief Member Services Officer.

Gettman will lead the Federal Advocacy & Public Policy group, which represents state school board associations and their members before the U.S. Congress and the Administration. The team of government relations professionals works on a range of financial, social and technical issues important to K-12 education. Gettman played a vital role in advocating for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), a landmark law that passed with bipartisan support. The new law brings significant enhancements to public education and provides greater responsibility to local education officials. The consultation provision in ESSA, in particular, recognizes the important role of school board members and their unique insights.

Skinner will lead the Member & Leadership Services group, which provides educational and training support to enhance school board leadership. The group oversees programming and services including NSBA’s National Connection, Council of Urban Schools of Education and several specialty councils, which are platforms for education leaders to network and address challenges facing public education. Member & Leadership Services also develops programs designed to effectively use public funds and offer high quality benefits to school board officials and staff, such as the School Rx Cooperative, an innovative pharmacy benefit program that delivers cost savings to self-funded districts.

Gettman joined NSBA in 2009 as the Director of Federal Programs and she took on the role of Deputy Associate Executive Director for Federal Advocacy & Public Policy in 2014. This past July, she assumed leadership of the Office of Federal Advocacy & Public Policy as interim Associate Executive Director.

Skinner joined NSBA in June of 2015 as the Director of State Association Partnership Services. In August 2016, he accepted the role of interim Associate Executive Director for Member & Leadership Services.

“Lucy and Ron are ideal people to join the executive team,” said Thomas J. Gentzel, Executive Director and CEO of NSBA. “They have made many contributions to enhance public education and their commitment to NSBA and their strategic vision ensures the association will continue to fulfill its mission.”
