NSBA’s Advocacy Agenda for 2017-2018

For more than 75 years, NSBA, a federation of 49 state associations and one territory association, has been working to ensure our public education system is appropriately supported by federal policymakers, so public schools can offer the best possible environment for students to realize their dreams. We seek to build on our accomplishments in the legal, legislative, public and regulatory spaces by using all of our tools, including the Council of School Attorneys (COSA), Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE), council and caucus groups, Conference of State Association Legislative Staff (CSALS), Federal Relations Network (FRN), Friends of Public Education Network (FRN), National SchoolBoards Action Center (NSBAC), the Stand Up 4 Public Education campaign, and a robust continuous media program.

In pursuit of our mission, with direction from our policy-making Delegate Assembly, NSBA outlines its key issues and priorities each year in its Advocacy Agenda. America’s Cornerstone, our Advocacy Agenda for 2017-2018 includes priorities to:

  • See that ESSA is implemented in a manner that recognizes the law’s clear directive to restore local governance and community ownership in public education;
  • Champion equity;
  • Defend against privatization by challenging vouchers, tuition tax credits and similar schemes;
  • Obtain adequate funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA);
  • Ensure that school districts have the flexibility and support needed to successfully administer school meal programs; and
  • Secure reauthorization for the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.
