The NSBA Council of School Attorneys’ premier 2012 School Law Practice Seminar will be held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 11-13, 2012! This seminar is for lawyers only and will focus on the difficult issues that you face day-to-day representing public school clients. Earn up to 10.5 hrs. of CLE credit with programming targeted to the needs of the school law practitioner.
Participate in an early bird session on special education or get a refresher on school safety and student discipline in the School Law Boot Camp, plus learn “24 Things a School Attorney Really Needs to Know” from a veteran practitioner. Choose from three concurrent sessions on Friday afternoon. You can select a session on immigration and English language learners, employment issues, or learn about intellectual property and confidentiality issues. If you’re a State Association counsel, or a school district in house counsel join your colleagues on Thursday morning for a complimentary luncheon & networking meeting.
Don’t miss the informative Thursday opening general session: Can Schools Be Both Safe and Free? Marc Stern, Associate General Counsel for the American Jewish Committee and (JUST ADDED!) Laura Schauer Ives, Legal Director, ACLU New Mexico, will join past COSA Chair Margaret A. Chidester, Irvine, CA, to discuss the new National Guidelines on Harassment, Bullying and Freedom of Expression. On Friday morning, you’ll hear about PFLAG v. Camdenton School District (Children’s Internet Protection Act & First Amendment claims), the new OCR issued guidance regarding compliance with Section 504, and the National School Law Docket with NSBA’s General Counsel, Francisco M. Negrón, Jr.
Saturday focuses on attorney/board member relationships and “reel” ethics – an entertaining and informative debate (illustrated by movie clips) on ethical dilemmas that school lawyers commonly face.
