Join us for a highly interactive session, learn about the eight Key Action Areas for school leaders, and apply them to your own district. A copy of The Key Work of School Boards Guidebook will be included as part of your registration fee.

Early Bird #2 - Making Meetings Matter
This three-hour, participant-centered workshop will challenge you, whether a new or veteran board member, to evaluate your board meetings and consider the following: How effective are your school board meetings? Do you dread or look forward to attending your board meetings? Does your board meeting agenda align with your district's goals/priorities? Are your meetings focused on student achievement? Are you satisfied with the length of your meetings? How can you become a better board member? Tools and techniques used by boards to conduct effective meetings will be shared.

Superintendent Evaluation and Board Self-Assessment Process: Key to Governance Success Public education today needs school board members who are strong leaders and superintendents who are highly effective. How does the school board track progress toward goals? How does it know whether the board and superintendent are fulfilling their roles effectively? Board self-assessment and evaluation of the superintendent's performance are fundamental to the success of a school district. This workshop will show board members how to effectively use the evaluation process to improve governance.

How long has it been since your board and superintendent have discussed expectations and goals? What skills are needed to shape a process that leads to continuous improvement? Learn about developing performance objectives that are aligned to district goals and the use of data to support the process, as well as who should be involved.

Early Bird #6 - Getting the Most from Your Student Board Representative
This three-hour session offers insights and resources to maximize the benefits of youth-direct participation in school governance, not only for the student, but for the community and the school board as well. This experiential session, combining youth and adults, will highlight the practical elements that promote authentic student representation. Drawing on the experiences of youth and school board members across the U.S., participants will become involved in a variety of successful methods, tools, and policies that engage youth and adults in working side by side in school leadership.

Early Bird #9 - Foundations of Effective Governance
Citizen oversight of local government is the cornerstone of American democracy. Thus locally elected school boards govern public schools. The role of trustees who sit on these boards is to ensure school districts are responsive to the values, beliefs, and priorities of their communities, and to focus all district efforts on improving student learning. Through 58 learner outcomes, board members and superintendents will gain the foundational knowledge and skills to effectively fulfill their governance role.
