Hispanic Caucus honors Gallucci

The National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members presented its annual Abrazo Award to former NSBA President Jane Gallucci.

“Abrazo,” a symbol of endearment among Latinos, means “hug” or “embrace,” said the caucus’ 2007-08 chair, Lilliemae G. Ortiz.

The annual award honors an individual who commits time and resources to support Hispanic schoolchildren and further the mission and goals of the Hispanic caucus.

Gallucci, a member of the Pinellas County, Fla., school board, helped raise awareness of the caucus through her travels across the nation as NSBA president in 2006-07 to search for and recognize “snapshots of success” and was the first NSBA president to attend the Hispanic Caucus’ annual retreat. Wherever she went, Gallucci “always brought a welcoming smile and hug,” Ortiz said.
