Hispanic Caucus honors Trevino and Wooten

The National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members (NHC) honored two school board leaders with the Abrazo award.

Former NHC chairman Fernando M. Trevino and former NSBA President Norman Wooten received the award during the caucus’ luncheon on Monday. Trevino is president of the School City of East Chicago board of trustees in East Chicago, Ind. Wooten, who was NSBA’s president in 2007-08, is a member of the Kodiak Island Borough School District in Kodiak, Alaska.

The annual Abrazo award honors individuals who have committed their time, energy and resources to improving educational opportunities for all Latino children. Tony Gonzalez, a former NHC president, suggested the term “abrazo”—meaning “hug” or “embrace”—which is a gesture Latinos often use to greet or say goodbye to one another.
