Kris Howatt
President

Kris G. Howatt is president of the Oregon School Boards Association.  During her five years as a director on the OSBA board she has served as Secretary/Treasurer, Co-Chair of OSBA’s Finance Committee, Legislative Policy Committee member, and is currently on the Policy Review Committee.  Since 2008 she has participated in the Federal Relations Network Oregon delegate team.  

In 2010, Kris was one of three Oregon school board directors to receive the National School Boards Association “Certificate of Distinguished Services,” in recognition of her extraordinary commitment to America’s children through school board leadership and service.  She completed her Leadership Oregon training in 2007, and has been instrumental in leading her district to five straight years of Leadership Institute Award recognition for professional board development.  Kris is currently working on bringing greater support to the work of the American Indian/Alaska Native Caucus. 

Kris and her husband Duncan, a database administrator, have two daughters and are long-time school volunteers. Now in her 11th year of school board service, Kris was recently re-elected to a 4th term on the Gresham-Barlow Board.  In the free time that she has, Kris enjoys quilting, costume design, and managing a golf team.

Betsy Miller-Jones

Betsy Miller-Jones is the current interim executive-director ofthe Oregon School Boards Association. Prior to her appointment to interim executive-director, Miller-Jones was serving as OSBA Associate Director of Board Development and Policy Services.  She provided training, facilitation and board development services to Oregon school district, ESD and community college boards.

She recently redesigned OSBA’s Board Development Training Plan, and has developed and presented workshops statewide on Board Roles and Responsibilities, Goal Setting and Strategic Planning, Running Effective Meetings, Role of the Chair, Board Operating Agreements, Leading Even When You are Not in Charge, Superintendent Evaluation and Building a Strong Leadership Team.

Betsy has six years experience as an elected school board member and prior experience with executive search services and board training with the New Hampshire School Boards Association. She is a nationally recognized board trainer, presenting the past fiveyears at the National School Boards Association annual convention and at other state conferences. 

Betsy has a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Duke University and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
