Burl Ghastin
President

Burl Ghastin has served as a member of the Van Buren ISD since 1985, and served as a member of the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) Board of Directors since 2005.   Currently, he serves as the Association’s president.  

A life-long learner, Burl has earned MASB’s President’s Award of Recognition, the highest individual honor in MASB’s board certification program. He has also participated in countless workshops and conferences around public education and has served on various association committees.

Burl also holds the Advocacy Skills Specialty, which helps him advocate on behalf of public education.

Kathy Hayes
Executive Director

Kathy Hayes is executive director of the Michigan Association of School Boards.  Prior to assuming this position, she was Associate Executive Director of the Leadership Development Department at MASB, she was responsible for designing and managing the professional development programs for board members including conferences, CBA classes, board training and distance learning.  

Kathy’s background is unique at MASB in that she has the multiple perspectives of a classroom teacher, a group therapist, a consultant and was a board member with the Williamston Board of Education for over 15 years. She has been trained extensively in group dynamics and conflict resolution techniques. Kathy’s background assists her in designing and developing programs for board members that are relevant and current to the needs of board members. 

Currently, she has provided over 200 workshops for districts across the state.  Kathy received her Bachelor of Science degree from Wayne State University in special education and her Masters of Arts degree at Michigan State University in therapeutic recreation.
