Michael Hughes
President

Michael Hughes is the president/CEO of A New Leaf, a local non-profit human-services agency whose mission is Helping Families…Changing Lives, where he has worked for 30+ years.  The Mesa-based organization’s more than 400 employees, along with volunteers, annually provide services to nearly 20,000 individuals.

Mike recently was elected to his fifth term on the Mesa Unified School District governing board, and he ran “mainly because of the challenging times we’re facing.  There are too many challenges right now, with the budget and other issues, to walk away from it.”  During this 16-year tenure on the board, Hughes has served as president for four terms.  He is a six-time Arizona School Boards Association delegate for the National School Boards Association’s Federal Relations Network, and has chaired the ASBA Legislative Committee two of the six years he has served on the committee.

A resident of Mesa for the last 36 years, Mike has a Master’s degree in Education from Nova University and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Arizona State University. He is a charter board member of the East Valley Institute of Technology Foundation, a founding board member of the Mesa Arts Academy Charter School and a community board member of the ASU Lodestar Center.  He is also on the board of Mesa United Way and Family Life Center.  Mike and his wife, Mary Margaret, have five children and three grand children.

Dr. Timothy Ogle
Executive Director-Elect (starts February 6)

The board of directors of the Arizona School Boards Association announced the selection of Dr. Timothy Ogle, superintendent of schools in one of Indiana’s highest achieving and fastest growing school districts, as its new executive director. Ogle has been credited with providing visionary leadership to the Avon, Ind., school district since becoming superintendent in 2005. He was selected to lead ASBA after a highly competitive national search which began in August. He will join the organization on Feb. 6.

“Tim Ogle is an exceptional leader, innovative thinker and consensus decision-maker with a sharp focus on what is best for children,” said Mike Hughes, president of the ASBA Board of Directors. “His experience leading highly effective teams, coupled with strong advocacy at the statehouse and through both business and civic organizations, reflect ASBA’s vision of providing quality leadership and advocacy for children in public schools.”

Hughes also pointed to Ogle’s commitment to and success with governing board development as an asset to ASBA. The Avon school district has earned eight consecutive Exemplary Board Awards by the Indiana Association of Schools Boards.

Ogle holds experience in diverse school districts as a superintendent, curriculum director, principal and teacher. In Avon, a K-12 district with 8,700 students, he focused his work on providing all students with a rigorous and relevant curriculum, providing quality professional development, building community partnerships and ensuring the financial stability of the school system. His efforts have helped the district’s student population exceed all state standards. Avon seniors rank among the best in the state on advanced placement exams. The development and implementation of an award-winning, technology-rich college preparatory school on the district’s high school campus is among his accomplishments.

Ogle holds a B.S. in education and an M.S. in school administration from Indiana University, an Ed.S. from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in school administration from Indiana State University.
