Dr.
Carl Smith is no stranger to public education in Maryland. Smith earned his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from the University of Maryland and spent the largest chunk of his career working for Montgomery County Public Schools. During his years in Montgomery County, he held a variety of leadership positions including classroom teacher, high school and middle school principal, area office director, executive assistant to the superintendent, and associate superintendent of human services.
In l991, Smith became superintendent of the Brandywine School District in Delaware. After four years in that role, he became an associate professor of educational leadership at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. In addition to his teaching responsibility, Smith served as program coordinator. In l996, he was instrumental in creating a partnership between the College and the Massachusetts Association of School Committees to support the work of local school boards through professional development.
Carl and his wife reside in Columbia, Maryland. They have three children.
