On Tuesday, March 8, 2011, NSBA presented “News you can use,” a webinar featuring the latest information on tobacco control. Presentations featured recent research and data regarding tobacco use and prevention, including the latest Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health, and recent work by the FDA on new cigarette warning labels. The discussion helped inform work being done to promote comprehensive tobacco-free school policies.

The Impact of School Tobacco Policies on Student Smoking in Washington State, United States and Victoria, Australia
This new study shows that in schools with strictly enforced nonsmoking policies, students perceive lower rates of smoking on school grounds among their peers.

What is the National Consortium on Tobacco Use Prevention?
The Consortium is designed to foster partnerships at the national, state and local level that will strengthen efforts to prevent the initiation of tobacco use by youth and promote the adoption and enforcement of comprehensive tobacco-free school policies and practices.

Who are the National Consortium's members?
Members are state school boards associations and national, non-governmental organizations (NGO's) with state or regional-level affiliates.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Guidelines for Tobacco Use Prevention through Schools and Related Resources
Components recommended by the CDC for comprehensive tobacco-free schools, and other relevant resources from the CDC. (CDC is expected to issue revised guidelines in 2009.)

Fit, Healthy, and Ready to Learn: Chapter F Policies to Prevent Tobacco Use
This guide, from the National Association of State Boards of Education, provides guidance on developing a comprehensive, integrated policy aimed at discouraging young people from taking up tobacco use and encouraging current tobacco users to quit. A framework is provided for policy development aimed at creating tobacco-free environments, tobacco use prevention education, and tobacco cessation programming.
