Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education - Kindergarten through 12th Grade (3rd Edition)
Abstract:The 3rd edition of the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States' (SEICUS)
Guidelines provides a framework of the key concepts, topics, and messages for comprehensive sexuality education programs. The
Guidelines serve as a starting point for teachers and curriculum designers, and can be used by local communities to plan new programs, evaluate existing curricula, train teachers, educate parents, conduct research, and write new materials. The basic structure and content are the same as in previous editions. However, certain topics, messages, and age-levels have been changed to reflect new information and the reality that today’s young people are facing. A new section on using the
Guidelines has been added to provide specific advice, ideas, and resources that help educators implement and provide high-quality sexuality education to young people in their schools and communities. The history and structure of the guidelines, the goals of sexuality education, values inherent in the
Guidelines, and fundamental principles are outlined. In addition, the
Guidelines describe key concepts such as human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture; and include additional resources, a curriculum evaluation tool, and a STDs/HIV checklist.
