Emerging Answers: Research Findings on Programs to Reduce Teen Pregnancy

Abstract:
This publication reports a comprehensive review of evaluation research that offers information on evidence-based programs to prevent teen pregnancy. In addition to examining traditional sex education, the report discusses abstinence-only education programs for teens, contraceptive and family planning services, early childhood programs, youth development and service learning opportunities. Research in this publication indicates that several programs that focus on sex-- as well as some that do not address sex at all-- have shown sustained positive effects on delaying the onset of sex, improving contraceptive use, or preventing pregnancy among adolescents. One intensive program that combines sex education, comprehensive health care, and activities such as tutoring has been shown to have an impact on sexual and contraceptive behavior, pregnancy, and births among girls for as long as three years. This document reports that current evidence about the success of abstinence only programs is inconclusive due, in part, to the very limited number of high-quality evaluations of these programs and because the few studies that have been completed do not reflect the great diversity of abstinence-only programs currently offered.
