Can We Talk?: Helping Parents and Youth Talk About Healthy Relationships and the Prevention of Teen Pregnancy, HIV, Drug Abuse and Violence
Abstract:This brochure describes 'Can We Talk?,' an interactive workshop series that helps parents enhance their role in their children's health and sexuality education. 'Can We Talk?' workshops address parent-child communication, promoting healthy relationships, role modeling of family members, finding community resources, preventing HIV and teen pregnancy, respecting different perspectives, and preventing drug abuse and violence. The parent workshops could be evening workshops in a school or community center or brown-bag lunch presentations in the workplace. The 'Can We Talk? Planning and Training Manual' (170 pages) offers tips on setting up workshops, creating partnerships with other organizations, and facilitating the four-part workshop series. 'The Can We Talk? Family Activity Book' (90 pages) gives parents resources to talk with their children about self-esteem, puberty and sexuality, mixed messages, and peer pressure, and it also includes information about HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, and human reproduction. 'The Can We Talk? Animated Cartoon Series' contains five animated short stories, each focusing on a special workshop topic. Overall, these will be helpful resources for those seeking to increase parent involvement in children's health and sexuality education.
