SC - Staff Attorney


Position Location: Charleston, South Carolina

Position Description:

Position Requirements:
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Law degree from an accredited law school; 
  • 8 years practicing law; 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; 
  • Excellent organization and problem solving skills; 
  • Demonstrated judgment and discretion ability; 
  • Proficient computer skills to include MS Office and the Internet; 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; 
  • Ability to develop and maintain a harmonious and productive working relationship with all levels of CCSD staff; and 
  • Licensed to practice law in SC and a member of the SC State Bar Association.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Directly related law experience in public education; 
  • Knowledge of "No Child Left Behind (NCLB)", EEOC regulations, Special Education and ADA.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • (Primary) Supports the strategic direction of CCSD and ensures that the Superintendent’s directives are executed; 
  • Advises the Superintendent, Board of Trustees and staff on legal matters; 
  • Attends regular Board meetings and other meetings as directed by the Superintendent; 
  • Ensures compliance with laws, policies, regulations, codes, etc.; 
  • Coordinates compliance with the Public Records Act; 
  • Maintains the CCSD policy manual and participates in the development of District policies and regulations ensuring that policies are current and accurate in form. Serves as the CCSD representative on the Board Policy Committee; 
  • Prepares and renders legal opinions to the Superintendent, Board and staff ; 
  • Develops position statements on behalf of the District in response to EEOC complaints; 
  • Represents the administration in student disciplinary and personnel matters before the Board; 
  • Coordinates the handling of all litigation involving the school district; 
  • Conducts in-services and workshops on appropriate topics to keep district employees informed and educated in legal issues such as Sexual Harassment, EEOC, etc.; 
  • Advises the school district on matters of insurance, contracts and actions required to comply with the law; 
  • Oversees 504 requests and accommodations for CCSD employees; 
  • Works cooperatively in negotiating contracts which affect the school district; 
  • Works cooperatively with the Office of Planning Partnerships and Communication to respond to telephone and letter inquiries from the public; 
  • Works cooperatively with Human Resources on employee grievances; 
  • Works cooperatively with District administrators in addressing student adjudication; and 
  • Advises the administration on significant changes in the law.
  • (Secondary) Stays current with active and pending legislative matters; and
  •  Performs all other duties as assigned by the designated supervisor.

Physical/Mental Requirements: 

  • Sedentary Work: Primarily sitting 80% of the time; and 
  • Stress Level: High; fast paced environment with fluctuating deadlines and immediate response times.

Salary Range: Salary negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
