The Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation’s second largest school district, is currently seeking an individual with an exceptional background to lead our Office of General Counsel.

The selected individual will lead an organization committed to protecting the legal interests of LAUSD. The Office of the General Counsel has just under 100 staff members, including over 30 attorneys and supervises numerous outside law firms on District matters. As General Counsel, you will be expected to be innovative and creative in developing solutions. You will advise the Board, Superintendent and senior staff on key issues affecting major policy decisions. The General Counsel will work closely with and will serve as a resource to other District divisions.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading and managing a complex legal office and has demonstrated the ability to motivate a diverse and talented team of professionals. The candidate must be able to work effectively with legal and non legal staff, clients and the community to develop and build consensus, and resolve conflicts and have a record of advising senior management in their decision making processes. Significant experience with governmental entities is a plus.
Entrance Requirements
Include a baccalaureate from a recognized college or university and a Juris Doctor Degree or equivalent from an American Bar Association accredited institution. At least ten years of experience, as a practicing member of the Bar and the authorization to practice law in California by the California State Bar Association are required. Experience in education law is desirable, but not required.
Salary and benefits
LAUSD offers a competitive salary of $248,256 annually and a complete benefits package, including fully paid family medical, dental and vision coverage for the employee and all dependents, 24 days of (annual) vacation and a CalPERS retirement plan.
