Parents of student who married her coach file suit against school district

Parents of a teenage student who married her 40-year-old high school cross-country coach have filed lawsuits against their school board for negligent supervision and against Guilford County Schools, where he taught previously. Dennis and Betty Hager allege the Guilford County school system was fully aware that Brent Wuchae had inappropriate relationships with female students during the nine years he worked there but failed to notify authorities or make notations in his personnel file. The Hagers’ attorney, Robert Tatum, released a statement on their behalf saying, "It is regrettable that sometimes school systems do not have the backbone to take decisive action to protect students. … The county did not take any steps to inform Brunswick County about Mr. Wuchae’s conduct and he ended up repeating his transgression there." The Hagers sued the Brunswick County school board earlier this month for not doing enough to stop the relationship, they say, had gone on for years. It was the Hagers who eventually signed an affidavit in June, allowing their daughter, Windy, to get married. Mr. Wuchae resigned from South Brunswick High the same day he married Windy. It’s not clear what proof the Hagers have that Mr. Wuchae had inappropriate relationships with Guilford County students.
