Participate in a National Webcast on What Schools Can Do to Prepare for a Potential Pandemic Flu Outbreak


On June 14, 2006 from 10 – 11:30 am Central time and again from 5:30 – 7:00 pm Central time, the Missouri School Boards Association will host “The Facts on Pandemic Flu: Keys for Schools in Planning, Preparedness, and Procedures – A National Issue,as a live broadcast to your computer. The viewer fee is $40.00.

While the program will be broadcast from Missouri, its content it meant for a national audience. It is intended to provide the most current and useful information on pandemic flu to school personnel – what it is, how it is spread, and how to plan for an outbreak. Appropriate for school board members, superintendents, school health professionals, counselors and others who are involved in school policies and practices, the program will be useful in gaining a sense of what the real threat of pandemic influenza will mean for schools and what reasonable measures school systems should take in the event of a pandemic.

Viewers will walk away with a better sense of the following:

  • What is pandemic influenza and how it differs from seasonal flu and avian flu;
  • How pandemic viruses are spread;
  • Why the Avian flu outbreak in Asia is a concern;
  • If a pandemic flu outbreak is imminent in the United States;
  • What plans, preparations and procedural steps schools should take if there is an outbreak; and
  • What resources are available for schools. The checklist developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services, for example, is an important resource.

The session will be presented by Eddie R. Hedrick, Senior Epidemiology Specialist, Coordinator of Emerging infections, Bureau for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. He is the author of numerous papers, abstracts, publications, and book chapters and has lectured widely. He has won several awards for his work, including his teaching.

Ann L. Bryant, Executive Director of the National School Boards Association will also be present to provide comments and answer questions.

The webcast is provided by ESGN and will utilize their state-of-the art “Talk to Event” feature where viewers are able to interact with the program presenters throughout the broadcast.
