Your Action Plan

This guide is designed to help you with your advocacy actions for public education. As we gear up for a Presidential election, conversations in Washington about key education issues have begun to slow down. We need your help to stress to Congress that public education does not pause for a Presidential election.

Listed below is a timeline for your advocacy actions over the next few months.

Please keep this toolkit until the November election and remember to visit www.nsba.org/advocacy/actionplan for updates on legislation.

  • June – Review the background information on the issues, and send letters to your members of Congress. Please also share a copy with NSBA. You may also access the letters and email copies to your members of Congress at www.nsba.org/advocacy/actionplan.
  • June 25 – Webinar #1 – Learn strategies for communicating with your members of Congress, and explore talking points for crafting a stronger argument on the key education issues when you speak with your members of Congress during the July 4th recess and the call-in day. This webinar will also be available online to download at a later time, and you will receive talking points from the webinar by email.
  • June 30 to July 6 – Meet with your members of Congress during the July 4th Recess. Your members of Congress will be at home in the district or state this week. You may see them at holiday events in the community, or you may want to set up a special meeting with them.
  • July 9 – Midsummer Call-in Day. Join your fellow school board members from across the country and call your members of Congress to discuss what Congress needs to do to help your schools. You will receive more details about the call-in day by email.
  • July 23 – Webinar #2 – Receive an update on the status of legislation on key education issues, strategies for planning your action during the August recess, and stories from fellow FRN members about what they have done in past years. This webinar will also be available online to download at a later time, and you will receive talking points from the webinar by email.
  • August – Meet with your members of Congress during the August recess. Your members of Congress will be home in the district or state this month. This is a great time to set up meetings with your members and also involve your local media. Read about some suggestions for the August recess in the Tips for August Recess Meetings.
  • September 10 – Back to School Call-in Day. Along with school board members across the country, call your members of Congress to follow-up on the key education issues you discussed with them during the month of August. Remind them of the impact on your local district.
  • Fall 2008 – Stay tuned for further action.
