Fund-raising campaign nets $1.65 million in initial pledges

5/3/05 -- During the opening General Session at the NSBA Annual Conference, the National School Boards Foundation launched a major fund-raising campaign to support the newly created Center for Public Education.

Conference-goers were encouraged to support the campaign, which received $70,000 in individual pledges from school board members and others who confirmed their dedication to the mission of the Center for Public Education.

Founding corporate and state school boards association donors already pledged $1.58 million in support of the campaign before the campaign was officially launched.

That brings total contributions so far to $1.65 million.

A commitment by NSBA will provide a substantial amount in additional support during the next five years.

The Center’s mission is to serve as the trusted resource for validated public education research, information, and tools. It will create a central resource with information about the challenges facing public school systems and stories about how those challenges are being met.

The Center also will help the public understand current and emerging education issues and articulate the value of public education as the solid foundation of the nation’s democracy and economy.

NSBA and the National School Boards Foundation extend their thanks and appreciation to all of the donors: corporations, state associations, and individuals, who affirmed their belief that the Center for Public Education is essential.
