Garden Grove gets Broad Prize
9/28/04 -- The Broad Foundation awarded its third annual prize for urban education to the Garden Grove (Calif.) Unified School District Sept. 20.
The Broad Prize honors an urban school district that is demonstrating the greatest improvements in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among ethnic groups and between high and low-income students.
Garden Grove received $500,000 from the foundation to use for college scholarships.
Each of the four finalist school districts will receive $125,00 for scholarships. They are the Aldine Independent School District in Houston; Boston; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Charlotte, N.C.; and Norfolk, Va.
Garden Grove, located in Orange County, Calif., serves 50,000 students in 70 schools. Almost 60 percent of its students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches, and 50 percent are English learners.
Garden Grove was a finalist for the Broad Prize in 2002 and 2003. Last year, the Broad Prize went to the Long Beach (Calif.) Unified School District, and the first Broad Prize was awarded to the Houston Independent School District.
