Barbara Bolas is NSBA’s new president
At the conclusion of the NSBA Annual Conference, Barbara Bolas, of the Upper St. Clair, Pa., school board, took office as president of NSBA for the 2008-09 term. Bolas had previously served as president-elect.
During its annual meeting March 28, NSBA’s Delegate Assembly elected Earl C. Rickman III to the position of secretary-treasurer.
Rickman has been a member of the Mount Clemens, Mich., school board since 1984. He has served on the NSBA board since 2003 and is a former chair of the National Black Caucus of School Board Members.
The delegates elected C.H. “Sonny” Savoie, of the St. Charles Parish, La., school board, as president-elect of NSBA. He had been the 2007-08 secretary-treasurer.
The 2007-8 president, Norman Wooten of Kodiak, Alaska, remains on the NSBA leadership team as immediate past president.
The Delegate Assembly elected the following school board leaders to the NSBA Board of Directors:
• Central Region -- Mark C. Metzger, of Indian Prairie Community Unit School District 204 (to complete the rest of Rickman’s term on the board), and Charles “Ed” Massey, of the Boone County, Ky., board of education;
• Southern Region -- Linda Cranford, of the Asheboro City School District in North Carolina; and
• Western Region -- Judy Lair, of the Woodson County Unified School District in Yates Center, Kan.
Three current members of the NSBA board were re-elected: Mary Broderick of East Lyme, Conn. (Northeast Region); Carolyn J. Ortman of Hillsboro, Ore. (Pacific Region); and Randy Manning of Central Consolidated School District #22 in Shiprock, N.M. (Western Region).
Several other board members took office at the end of the Annual Conference:
• Cynthia Matus Morriss, the new chair of the National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members, automatically serves as a voting member of the NSBA board. She is a member of the Patagonia (Ariz.) Elementary School District #6 board of education.
• Jeannie M. “Sis” Henry, the new chair of the Federation Member Executive Directors’ NSBA Liaison Committee, will serve on the NSBA board as a non-voting member. Henry is executive director of the Georgia School Boards Association.
• The new chair of the Council of School Attorneys, Sam S. Harben Jr., of Harben & Hartley in law firm Gainesville, Ga., also serves as a non-voting member of the NSBA board.
The chairs of the National Black Caucus of School Board Members (Brian K. Perkins of New Haven, Conn.) and the Council of Urban Boards of Education (Steve Corona of Fort Wayne, Ind.) retain their seats as voting members of the NSBA Board.
