Addressing Childhood Asthma in Your Community
April 7, 2011 - The National School Boards Association (NSBA) and the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) have released a guide for families, youth-serving organizations, and school leaders on steps each can take to provide a consistent and supportive environment for children with asthma. In the Schoolyard and Beyond: Addressing Childhood Asthma in Your Community demonstrates how each of these entities shares responsibility for children with asthma by suggesting specific actions each should take to fulfill six overarching goals:
- Use Asthma Action Plans
- Reduce Asthma Triggers
- Manage Medications and Help Children Master the Correct Way to Use Them
- Encourage Opportunities for Physical Activity
- Establish and Maintain Good Communication
- Provide and/or Take Advantage of Asthma Education
The publication is available in both English and Spanish. Bulk requests of 25 copies or more are available by contacting AASA at children@aasa.org. Or make your own copies by downloading the Spanish or English version from either NSBA’s Asthma & Schools webpage or from AASA.
