New Initiative to Promote Physical Activity in Schools

January 25, 2011 - NSBA, with the School Health Programs Department, is one of several strategic partners in a new initiative called Let’s Move in School, which is hosted by the American Alliance for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and its National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).

The initiative will be launched with the Let’s Move in SchoolCall to Action Webinar being held on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, from 1 - 2 p.m. EST.  The Let’s Move in School webinar will provide the “why, what, and how” to get involved.  The last day to register for the webinar is Friday, January 28.   Upon registration, participants will receive a confirmation email containing more information about joining the webinar. System Requirements for PC-based attendees include: Windows® 7, Vista, XP or 2003 Server and for Macintosh®-based attendees: Mac OS® X 10.4.11 (Tiger®) or newer.

Let’s Move in School brings together leading education associations, federal agencies, and corporate partners in an effort to help schools coordinate physical activity before, during, and after school.  The initiative’s goal is to “ensure that every school provide a comprehensive physical activity program with quality physical education as the foundation so that youth will develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be physically active for a lifetime.”

Although it has been established by research that 60 minutes of physical activity a day is important for student health and academic performance, schools are challenged with how to offer adequate physical activity in the face of other education demands. Let’s Move in School provides a unified message along with tools and resources that make it easier to implement a comprehensive school physical activity program.
