Mental Health Resources Made Available for Schools in Response to the Virginia Tech Tragedy

In response to the Virginia Tech University (VT) shootings, The National Assembly on School-Based Health Care (NASBHC) has released a list of available resources to help people around the country cope with this tragedy and the grievance process, including the students served by school-based health centers. Below are some resources that NASBHC has identified for school-based health center staff and others to use to respond and cope with this tragedy:

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics has assembled a collection of resources to help parents, teachers, students, schools, and pediatricians cope with the aftermath of this terrible event. Additional resources are provided on violence prevention, school safety, and promoting mental health;
  • Mental Health America offers tips for educators, students and parents on how to talk about the tragedy;
  • The NYU Child Study Center has put together tips for parents and school professionals for talking to kids about tough topics such as school shootings and for understanding how children and adolescents cope with traumatic events;
  • The International Critical Stress Foundation offers a brief informational handout;
  • The UCLA Center for Mental Health in Schools has a handout on "Assessing Whether a Student Might Commit a Violent Act” as well as documents on Crisis Prevention and Response, Depression, Grief and Bereavement, Post-traumatic Stress, Prevention for Students at Risk, Safe Schools and Violence Prevention, and Threat Assessment; and
  • The Youth Policy Action Center has an online alert to communicate with elected officials and local media allowing persons to share whatever is their mind.  In addition, persons can contribute to Virginia Tech's Cook Counseling Center by making a donation. For the next week, all net proceeds donated to the Youth Policy Action Center (less administrative costs like processing credit cards) will be bundled and given to VT Counseling Center.  To donate CLICK HERE.
